About the book…

There are so many ways to kill a friendship . . .

You’re lying, sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, legs bent, arms wide.
And while this could be a tragic accident, if anyone’s got a motive to hurt you, it’s me.

Bec and Izzy have been best friends their whole lives. They have been through a lot together – from the death of Bec’s mother to the birth of Izzy’s daughter. But there’s a darker side to their friendship, and once it has been exposed, there is no turning back.

So when Izzy’s body is found, Bec knows that if the police decide to look for a killer, she will be the prime suspect. Because those closest to you are the ones who can hurt you the most . . .

The Rumour meets The Holiday in this compulsive thriller with a toxic friendship at its heart that keeps you in the dark until the final breathless pages.

Enormous thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things tours and publishers Simon And Schuster for the gifted e-arc and blog tour invite for debut novel, ‘My Best Friend’s Murder’, which is out in e-book and audiobook format on January 21st, and paperback original from 8th July.

An effortless thriller which launches with a death-but whose?-Polly Phillips launches herself as a writer to watch. She presents a complex and intertwined history between two women , whose reliance on each other is born from a genuine connection developed into dependency.

The way which friendships can develop to the point of toxicity and rivalry is neatly encapsulated as one of them dies and the other faces accusations of jealousy, bitterness and regret.

I loved the way that the narration puts you inside the mind of Bec, and how she views Izzy, your perceptions of both women are held at arms length whilst you play detective and unpick the pieces of how they have ended up at this point.

Skilfully building the suspense throughout the course of the novel, to a crashing crescendo of a finale,it has you turning inward to examine how people you were previously close to have drifted away from your orbit.

Especially given the context of the past horrific year that we have all navigated without a map, friendship has taken on a new meaning, significance and import to our mental health, and I think as well as being a great read, it has a lot to say on the nature of female friendship, and the almost grief process you go through as you extract yourself from the grips of some of them. In the case of Bec and Izzy, the outcome, however much worse than a Facebook ghosting,it is fatal!

Thanks again to the publishers and Anne Cater for letting me read this e-arc, hugely appreciate the opportunity and apologies for the late review!

About the author…

Polly is originally from South West London but after visiting Australia in 2011, she fell head over heels for the lifestyle, even though she doesn’t drink coffee and rarely goes to the beach!
Polly currently lives in Perth with her husband, daughter and much-loved dog. My Best Friend’s Murder won the writing prize at the Emirates Literature Festival and is her debut novel.
She hopes that after they read it, her friends will still be talking to her…
