So here we are, in the middle of a pandemic, and I think we have 2 types of readers
- the type who avoids each and every book with any of this end of the world stuff in, especially that which features a virus…

2. the type who reads dystopian fiction, because it offers a respite from the daily horrors drip fed by the news, and offers hope.

I am a type 2 person who loves a bit of self torture about how much worse things could get…and they don’t come much more end of the world-esque than ‘The Stand’
Featuring a virus which wipes out most of the human population after accidentally getting out of a government laboratory, the mutated flu known as ‘Captain Trips’ creates a brave new world in which those survivors must make their stand.
Will they side with good or evil?
Self determination and free will are examined through a close knit group of characters across the 1327 pages of the 1990 revised edition-the 1978 original has a mere 823-as they through their hat into the ring with either Mother Abigail or The Walking Dude, Randall Flagg.
The basis of a 1994 miniseries and an upcoming reboot, this apocalyptic tale of good versus evil has some standout moments which I am genuinely excited to see come to life (the Lincoln Tunnel, anybody?)
As such, director,Mike Flanagan, horror author Tananarive Due and King himself will be joining #TheStandChallenge, a limited series podcast available via Spotify and iTunes amongst others, to re-read this novel.
Have you read it before?
Will you be joining in again?
The readathon is using the complete and unabridged version, so this might take some time…but what company to be in!
I am so here for this! Starting on the 29th May, signup details are available via thestandpodcast.com here

I was type 2 when the virus was still only in Asia, I’m more type 1 now 😂 Had to give myself a serious peptalk to pick up The Waiting Rooms (ended up loving it regardless), so I’m not sure I can handle The Stand 🙈 I love it though, one of my favourite King novels.
Will be interesting to see how well it has aged in the intervening years, I feel the need to bury myself in end of the world fiction because it seems to cancel out the real world horror, if that makes sense? So ‘The Waiting Rooms’ is worth checking out then?
Yes, The Waiting Rooms is definitely worth your time! It hits home in a way it might not have if we hadn’t been in this situation, but there’s also a bit of mystery and absolutely beautiful human relationships, and that combination makes for a very compelling read.
