Here are my carefully curated, #Spooktober Top 5!
‘The Witches Of New York’ by Ami McKay

‘In the vein of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, comes a new novel from historical fiction maven Ami McKay that transports readers to the heart of Victorian New York, where three witches practice their craft—to the delight of some—but at their own peril.’
Now I have not read ‘Jonathan Strange…’ but I have read Ami McKay’s first novel, ‘The Virgin Cure’ and it was incredible .
This description of her witchy third novel has me wanting to read this so badly!

‘The Age Of Witches’ by Louisa Morgan

‘Harriet Bishop, descended from a long line of witches, uses magic to help women in need — not only ordinary women, but also those with powers of their own. She must intervene when a distant cousin wields dangerous magic to change the lives of two unsuspecting young people… one of whom might just be a witch herself.’
Having read the first two witch centric novelsd by Louisa Morgan, this is going to be a highlight of my 2020 bookstack! It’s not out until April but I can highly recommend filling the time between then and now by reading the others!
Also, has anyone noticed how Orbit are slamming it out of the park on genre fiction this year? Their women writers are insanely good!

‘The Witch Who Courted Death’ by Maria Lewis

Feminist, revisionist fiction that rewrites ghosts and supernatural fiction? Count me in! Another sure fire winner from Orion published Maria Lewis who does for witches what she did with werewolves-completely spins contemporary fiction on its head and kicks it into the 21st Century.
Twins Casper and Barastin are part of an undercover supernatural world who help ghosts move on..for a price.
Until suddenly they become the target of a legendary, unkillable force known as the Oct.
Who has a taste for killing witches…

‘Sadie Asquith has always been fascinated by the dark past of the Essex witch hunts. But as she researches the troubled era that saw over 500 women tried for witchcraft, Sadie experiences strange, ghostly visions. She hears a terrifying sobbing at night and black moths appear from nowhere. It’s as if she has opened an unearthly connection to the women killed centuries before.’
Well known now for her ‘Essex Witch’ museum series-highly recommended!-this is a classic story that I am so excited to dig out and read again.
Thoroughly chilling and immensely evocative, have the witch hunts ever, truly stopped?

‘Gingerbread’ by Helen Oyeyemi
‘Influenced by the mysterious place gingerbread holds in classic children’s stories—equal parts wholesome and uncanny, from the tantalizing witch’s house in “Hansel and Gretel” to the man-shaped confection who one day decides to run as fast as he can—beloved novelist Helen Oyeyemi invites readers into a delightful tale of a surprising family legacy, in which the inheritance is a recipe.’
Last but by no means least is the queen of witchy fiction, Helen Oyeyemi whose pedigree is outstanding (just try ‘White Is For Witching’ and tell me that I am wrong!) This is on my weekend TBR, thanks so much to the publishers for approving my Netgalley request (begging letter more like!)
Have you read it yet? Let me know what you think!
So there are my 5 reads-I’ve shown you mine, now it’s your turn!
Hit me up with some epic, witchy titles and watch out for the Great Pumpkin to make an appearance this Halloween!
