There’s wind blowing around the house, massive amounts of rain lashing the ground and birthday cake to be eaten. What goes better with coffee and cake, than books?

What are you reading this weekend? Is there anything exciting that you are waiting for? Drop me a comment below and give a shoutout to your favourite indie publishers and writers!

‘The Oshun Diaries is Diane Esguerra’s account of her improbable friendship as a young adult with an elderly Austrian woman in Nigeria who is a high-priestess of Oshun, a goddess of the ancient Ifa religion.

Written with humour and self-deprecation by the author of the acclaimed Junkie Buddha, this is an engaging mix of travel-writing, biographical memoir and spiritual exploration – with the timeless appeal of female-centred worship at the heart of its quest

This is one of the 2 books of the month titles from Eye and Lightning and is currently available with  25% off and free shipping!
What’s not to love about that?!

The other monthly book choice title,, from Lightning Books is an experimental one called ‘The Drover’s Wives’ by Ryan O’Neil which takes the classic Australian tale by Henry Lawson and reimagines it in 101 different ways.

Inventive and endlessly unexpected, it was shortlisted for the Russell Prize, Australia’s main award for comic writing. This is laugh-out-loud literature to be read in one go or savoured in small doses. Published in paperback via Eye Books website and available now.

This looks like a lot of fun but also really stands as a celebration of Australian literature by taking a story which broke the mould, and translating it so many ways that it brings something new and exciting to this classic tale.

Ranging in setting from Australia to Africa to China and back again, ‘The Weight Of A Human Heart’ was the first published fiction by this remarkable Scottish writer based in Australia. The stories in this volume are something special and extraordinary.I started this yesterday, and it is mind blowing how good these stories are, they really transport you to another place and time.

Wide ranging and weighty, whilst appearing relatively short in length, each tale so far has needed a break in between to really reflect on what I was reading. It is entirely new ground for me and I am enjoying every page!

This is available in ebook via the Eye Book website or as part of  a Kindle Unlimited subscription .

Riffing on Ray Bradbury’s classic novel about the end of reading, Tinderbox is one of the most interesting books in decades about literary culture and its place in the world.

More than that, it’s about how every one of us fits into that bigger picture – and the struggle to make sense of life in the twenty-first century.

‘Tinderbox’ by Megan Dunn is published by Galley Beggar Press and is available in either limited edition or mass market paperback via the website.

Megan Dunn’s book is a very timely and prescient focus on the writing process, reading and selling books and looks absolutely fascinating.

So that is me, these are the books I will be dipping into over the weekend and reviewing over the coming month! Drop me a line and let me know what you are up to, and don’t forget  to visit Eye Books and Galley Beggar, sign up for their newsletters and watch out for upcoming bookish delights.

  1. I’m reading Killer Instincts by Linden Chase (Fahrenheit Press). Thinking about buying the Soho Noir series from Red Dog Press. Indie all the way! 😀

    1. Oh amazing! Thanks for the Farenheit shoutout, I haven’t read that one so looking forward to your review! The Soho Noir series is higly recommended especially by Kelly Van Damme-her reviews are what got me signing up for the ‘Careless Whisper’ tour this week!

      1. My review eh…. 😉 I’ll let you know what I think about it.
It’s because of Kelly I am reading this series and really want to read the other ones. 😄

  2. Wow, so many books! I’ve spent most of my weekend stuck waiting for emergency plumbers to show up (both Saturday and Sunday after they botched the job on the first day!). Been reading a fantasy by an indie Author: The Sentinel’s Reign but Suzanne Rogerson. She’s a brilliant indie author, right up there with some of the best fantasy authors I’ve ever herad of 😀

    1. That’s just great and exactly what you need on a weekend! Hope they managed to get it sorted in the end and you’re back to normal. Thanks for the recommendation I will absolutely check it out 🙂
