About the book…

It is 1885, in the wilds of New Mexico and Cody Wilson and Willet Black are bent on revenge after their loved ones are slaughtered bya group of
traveling actors, but neither of them suspects what they’re really up against.

For the actors are vampires. Their thirst for human blood is insatiable. The
two must battle the vampires—alone—or die trying.

Many thanks to Anne Cater of and Flametree Press for my paperback copy of ‘‘Dust Devils’ which I was super grateful !

Another barnstorming belter of a horror novel from Jonathan Janz to add to my growing collection and what a ride!

This time out, vampires and the wild west are front and centre asking the age old question-how do you enforce the laws of humanity against creatures which are not human?!
The level of research put into ‘Dust Devils’ shows Jonathan’s passion for this time period, what better way for vampires to exist in when peripatetic nationals make record keeping so hard, and those who disappear without trace may have moved ont o better prospects or  they might just have been the latest meal for a troup of actors who are vampires in plain sight.

What these seasoned pros do not account for is being tracked by 2 people, a man and boy united in loss but not by blood, similar to ‘Salem’s Lot. They are bent on revenge without any clear idea who they are after.

Filled with scenes of blood, guts and lust with that unique Janz twist, this is another Flametree classic with an author interview preceding the novel. The king vampire, Mr Price, is a great invention and truly twisted! As a reader you know what you are getting, not ina way that seems familiar but it is a quality assurance, a guarentee of a wild ride in the hands of a master.

I am not sure if this is in the finished versions, I hope so as each acts as an apperetif to the book, giving a unique insight into the writing and editing process which I thoroughly adore.

Again, this is the 4th Janz book which I have read and he is chameleon like in the way that he takes his skills and moves around in the horror genre. Vampires may have been done to death-quite literally-yet in ‘Dust Devils’ they live to fight another day. Or rather, another night…

This is NOT for the faint of heart…

About the author…

Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forestand a
graveyard, which explains everything. Brian Keene named his debut novel The Sorrows “the best horror novel of 2012.”
The LibraryJournal deemed his follow-up, House of Skin,
“reminiscent of ShirleyJackson’s The Haunting of Hill House
and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story.”
Since then Jonathan’s work has been lauded by writers like Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, Tim Waggoner, Bryan Smith, and Ronald Kelly.

Novels like ‘The Nightmare Girl’, ‘Wolf Land’, ‘Savage Species’,and ‘Dust Devils’ prompted Thunderstorm Books to sign Jonathan to an eleven-book deal and to give
him his own imprint, ‘Jonathan Janz’s Shadow Side’.

His novel Children of the Dark received astarred review in Booklistand was chosen by their board as one of the Top Ten Horror Books of the Year (August2015-September2016). ‘Children of the Dark’ will soon be translated into German and has been championed by the LibraryJournal, the SchoolLibraryJournal, and Cemetery Dance. In early 2017, his novel ‘Exorcist Falls’ was released to critical acclaim.
Jonathan’s primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. You can learn more about Janz at https://jonathanjanz.com/
