About the book…

Hugest of thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for having me along on the blog tour for one of my favourite authors (Jonathan Janz) from one of my favourite publishers (FlameTree Press)

‘House Of Skin’ is available in hardback from 30/05/2019

“Fans of ghost stories like The Haunting of Hill House and Hell House will love this book.” – Horror Maiden
Myles Carver is dead. But his estate, Watermere, lives on, waiting for a new Carver to move in. Myles’s wife, Annabel, is dead too, but she is also waiting, lying in her grave in the woods. For nearly half a century she was responsible for a nightmarish reign of terror, and she’s not prepared to stop now. She is hungry to live again…and her unsuspecting nephew, Paul, will be the key.
Julia Merrow has a secret almost as dark as Watermere’s. But when she and Paul fall in love they think their problems might be over. How can they know what Fate―and Annabel―have in store for them? Who could imagine that what was once a moldering corpse in a forest grave is growing stronger every day, eager to take her rightful place amongst the horrors of Watermere?
This is the first ghost story that I have read by Janz after 2 very animalistic horror tales and it shows the breadth that he has as a writer to explore outside of his comfort zone, The references to other horror characters and nods to writers are easy to spot, even without the interview at the beginning, I would have recognised the homage to Shirley Jackson and Peter Straub but shot through the lens of Janz’ fevered imagination, this becomes a multicoloured blood splatter riot rather than a subtle shade of noir.
I did get a little tired of the constant objectification of women’s bodies…one more sentence on the shape of breasts or arses would have tipped me over the edge. But maybe that is the point which he is trying to make ? That the men who do this, and expect a ‘yes’ for every advance to turn into full blown sex, get exactly what they deserve?
Watermere is a house drenched with history and bloodstains, it is exactly the place that a horror writer needs to pretty much land in their lap as they struggle to write the next, great novel. But on the way there, Paul Carver hits a family of possums and that is where his run of bad lucks starts ….a missing real estate agent, a house with a macabre history and a woman with a secet are the catalysts for some terrifying ghostly action which has the power to make-or break- Paul.
If you are a fan of Janz, you are going to love it. If you are not, then get on board the ghost train, you are in for a treat!
