My thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours and Bantam Press for my gifted paperback copy of Karen Cleveland’s latest thriller, ‘Keep You Close’.
Out in paperback ,ebook and audiobook formats, this is going to be unmissable!
About the book…
A strange sensation runs through me, a feeling that I don’t know this person in front of me, even though he matters more to me than anyone ever has, than anyone ever will.
You go into your son’s bedroom. It’s the usual mess. You tidy up some dirty plates, pick up some clothes, open the wardrobe to put them away.
And that’s when you find it.
Something so shocking it doesn’t seem real.
And you realize a horrifying truth…
Your own son might be dangerous.
Keep You Close is the chilling, relentless new thriller from the bestselling author of ‘Need To Know’
How far will a mother go to protect her child, and what lines will she cross to do so?
In ‘Keep You Close’, single parent Stephanie, FBI agent, has become distanced from her son,Zach, who behaves like every sullen teenage boy I have ever met-to the point that you want to reach into the pages of the book, shake him and shout ‘LOOK AT WHAT YOUR MOTHER IS DOING YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT!’
KAren Cleveland has her characters bang to rights, Zach is not a caricature, he is a fully rounded, angst rideen American teen looking for a sense of identity in a world that is losing it’s mind. His mother is an agent of the state, one of the people charged with keeping things on track, so when she finds a gun in his closet, she has to work out firstly, how to approach this, secondly work out what he planned to do with it and thirdly , how the hell did her get it in the first place.
All the thoughts that an overworked, guilt ridden mother would have crowd in on her -her loyalty to her job and therefore country, versus her loyalty to her son. What would you do?
So begins a race against time as she tries to uncover who has recruited her son , how to bring them down without the FBI involving her son and her moral compass swinging wildly between maternal instinct and societal pressures to do the greater good.
It’s a moral dilemma-what would you do in her shoes?
Karen brings her personal, professional experience to bear in this timely and apt novel that is grounded in a frightening reality.
A fast, intense and gripping thriller, I really enjoyed it and fully intend to read her first novel now!
