About the book…
The only obituary you never want to read – is your own.
Laura Swallow is dead.
A life cut tragically short, says the newspaper obituary.
But that’s a lie.
Estate agent Laura did not die in a car accident. She is alive and well.
At first, Laura thinks it’s a sick joke.
But multiple announcements of her death are followed by increasingly sinister real-life events. Already fragile, struggling to recover from a recent divorce, Laura is plunged into a living nightmare.
Who can she trust? Her new lover? Her clients and work colleagues? What about her ex-husband and his smug fiancée? Can Laura even rely on her best friends? And why is it that Laura’s present troubles are so tied up with her sister’s sudden death all those years ago?
But one thing Laura is sure of – someone out there wants her to suffer. Wants her gone.
Forever.
HUGEST of thanks to the fabulous Emma of Damp Pebbles Blog Tours for the tour invite, wow what a thriller!
How would you feel when people are turning white , right in front of you, clutching their throat and whispering ‘I thought you were dead’? Or answering hysterical calls from your daughter who has seen a host of ‘in memorian ‘ posts on your facebook page?
Truly shiver inducing, this is merely the start of some horrendous events for Laura Swallow.
It’s not merely bad enough that she lost her sister, Becky, in a tragic accident and her mother in the same time frame that her husband decides to leave her for a younger woman and have the second child Laura couldn’t.Even her job as an estate agent was a called in favour from old schoolyard friend,Jenny.
She is stuck in a flat, the only place she can afford, in a kind of limbo, lurching from work to home and back again ,her closest friend was actually her sister’s who she got to know after the funeral and as for dating? Try being a 50 year old woman and picking up the pieces-Dr Ben Logan, the man who she gets talking to at an art exhibition run by best friend Anna, seems a perfect match if only she can get over her insecurities. Or her old school crush who has grown up most delightfully and is seperating from his wife, who has suddenly appeared on the scene..
Laura is one of those characters where you’d read all the above and think this is deseprately awful, where’s her redeeming characteristics? Why is all this stuff happening to her ? What is going on?
Miranda Rijks imbues her with strength to fight all the really, really horrible things that happen, and keeps you on your toes throughout, never really knowing who to trust.
Why and how seem secondary to just staying alive as the plot entwines itself around Laura -literally so well named as she is swallowed whole by the events in her life-and she struggles to get anyone to believe her. ironically it is her ex’s new wife who starts the ball rolling by identifying the death certificate which arrives in the post as a fake.
It has to be someone close to Laura who has started this campaign of terror, but why, and for what end?
And as she tries to figure out the truth, is she at risk of pushing away those who could genuinely help her?
A really gripping, involving story with moments that made me wince in horror at the things done to Laura, this introudces a major new talent in psychological thriller writing.

Sounds promising but I am trying to cut back on acquiring new crime/thrillers because I already have way more than I can possibly read in a reasonable time 🙂
