About the book…
The official continuation of the hit Netflix series and set in the iconic Kong franchise, Return to Skull Island is a thrilling continuation.
Written by Simon Furman (Transformers) and illustrated by Christopher Jones (Young Justice, Teen Titans) – be amongst the explorers witnessing epic battles between monsters.
Return to Skull Island collects the thrilling official continuation comic of the hit Netflix Kong: Skull Island animated series, adapting the intense, monster-filled world.
This enthralling comic continues the story of a diverse group of explorers on the perilous Skull Island. They’re constantly in danger, not only from the gargantuan creatures that tower over the treetops, but also the enemies that lurk in the island’s shadows.
The survivors face deadly, life-threatening challenges, as they uncover the island’s dark secrets and fight for survival in a land where every creature is a threat, including Kong himself.
Writer Simon Furman brings his expertise in creating epic, character-driven stories to Return to Skull Island, offering a high-stakes narrative filled with twists, betrayals, and heart-pounding action.
Furman’s signature style of deep world-building and complex character arcs ensures that each issue is more than just a battle for survival—it’s a clash of ideologies, fears, and alliances.
The story culminates in a fierce battle between Kong and a terrifying new adversary, a grotesque monster who’s toxic trail plagues the island, leaving destruction, suffering, and then eventually silence in its wake
Illustrated by Christopher Jones, the comic bursts with dynamic action, vivid landscapes, and intricate creature designs, capturing the island’s menacing beauty. This is a must-read for fans of Kong: Skull Island, the MonsterVerse, and anyone who loves adrenaline-fueled adventure set against a backdrop of giant monsters and deadly intrigue.
On sale soon, from March 10th in GLORIOUS paperback bind up editions, this is the book that cryptid fans have been waiting for, ‘Return To Skull Island Volume 1’,
This is perfect time for anyone in love with the Monsterverse (ahem…) as the new season of ‘Monarch‘ is due to drop at the end of February, and, I don’t know about you, but I am pretty stoked it is returning!
It is action packed , picking up where volume 1 left off, with Kong and the Kraken fighting to the death, thanks to protagonist Charlie who stole a necklace from Kong’s sanctuary, in order to get him to attack the Kraken, and allow him and his family to escape.
Wrong!
The Kraken’s poison has seriously injured Kong, the islanders are concerned that the fragile equilibrium on Skull Island will be fractured, with catastrophic consequences within and without the Hollow earth.
Monsters are rising, they are not all friendly and on our side, and as someone who has not read the first volume, there is a short and handy catchup which is not at all expositional, more like a ‘previously on…’ told by a friend.
The action is non stop as Charlie gets captured by islanders, the search teams frantically try to find each other and rescue Charlie who is suspended over a Hollow Earth chasm entry point, for the ‘island to decide his fate’.
Bright colours and knock out graphics really speed the story along across the storyboards and double page illustrations, you become immediately invested not just in Kong’s fate, but those of the expedition party and incomers from the islands around the titular one.
There is neat flip where Annie, an island girl, is transported out to new York and finds the many things we take for granted as ‘normal’, as as terrifying to her as the multiple beasts and threats are to Charlie, back on Skull Island.
And whilst Kong is convalescing, the other beasts begin to sicken and something arises, to try and take back control from the King of Skull Island.
I really enjoyed how they dealt with multiple timelines without it being confusing, whilst advancing the characters,-there is a sense of loss and grief, for the known and the unknown alike, as well as how to move forward in these situations, that is so well conveyed.
The character development artwork and alternate covers at the back are a glorious addition I come to expect from Titan, it is not merely the comic, it is an acknowledgement of the singular work of the writers, artists and colourists.
The modern world and all its accoutrements are not necessary for survival in a place like Skull Island, ingenuity, trust and faith in the team that returns there, not knowing what else they will face in terms of internal, or external danger comes through loud and clear.
And the cliffhanger?
Well I for one cannot wait to see what happens next!
