About the book…Enter a lush Greco-Roman inspired fantasy where a glittering world, a lottery built on lies, and a forbidden romance come together as 18-year-old Maris attempts to escape a city under siege, from the author of New York Times bestseller, .
In the great walled city of Isara, political turmoil ignites a rebellion one hundred years in the making. But when a legionnaire falls in love with a Magistrate’s daughter, their love will threaten the fate of the city and the will of the gods.
Luca Matius has one purpose―to carry on the family name, maintaining its presence in the Forum once his powerful and cruel uncle dies. But his noviceship with the city’s Philosopher places him in the middle of a catastrophe that will alter the destiny of his people.
Maris Casperia was raised amidst the strategic maneuvers of the Citadel’s inner workings, and she knows what her future holds―a lifetime of service to a corrupt city. But her years of serving as a novice to the last Priestess who possesses the stolen magic of the Old War has made her envision a different kind of future for the city. When she meets Luca, a fated chain of events is set into motion that will divinely entangle their lives.
As a secret comes to light and throws the city into chaos, Luca and Maris hatch a plot to create a calculated alliance that could tip the scales of power. But when an execution forces Luca to become the symbol of rebellion, he and Maris are thrown onto opposite sides of a holy war. As their fates diverge, they learn they are at the center of a story the gods are writing. And even if they can find their way back to each other, there may be nothing left.
Huge thanks again to Amy at Titan Books for my beautiful gifted hardcover of the first in the Fallen City duology, ‘Fallen City’‘, which is out now from all good bookshops.
I have been a huge fan of Adrienne Young, since her first fantastical twist on Viking mythology , ‘Sky In The Deep’, so the opportunity to read Greco/Ro,an fantasy, with a slow burn romance at the heart of it, across dual timelines, and dual narratives?
Yes please!
In the city of Isara those within the city are ruled by by the Magistrates , whilst those outside are ruled by legionannire, Lucus Matias.
His troops are barricaded on the river banks opposite Isara, his troops are publicly killing any Magistrates that they can find .
Inside the city, the latest Magistrate to gain their seat, due to their mother’s suicide, is Maris. Maris has spent her time in her mother’s presence to build a reputation for herself, whilst refusing to allow herself to be used by the more powerful Magistrates to tip the scales in the balance of power.
This includes her wily uncle, who assumes she will be in alliance with him, watching her keenly, historcial alliances thin on the ground as well as her mother’s manner of death a bone of contention, she is facing the biggest challenge of her life…
Outside Isara, Lucius is hiding his connection to Maris , he has increasingly weary troops to muster and where there would be helpo coming down from the gods, there is none.
Not because they don’t exist in this timeline, but because human behaviour and lack of respect has angered them into absolving all responsibility to their human creations.
Against a back drop of a huge conflict, into which the reader is plunged headfirst,Maris and Lucus must decide whether what they mean to each other, is equivalent to , or more than, their social and religious obligations.
I didn’t want this lavish, gorgeous book to end…
But wait!
Part 2 is out next year !!
Hurray!
