About the book…
How far would you run to escape your past?
Venice Beach, Los Angeles. A paradise on earth.
Tourists flock to the golden coast and the promise of Hollywood.
But for eight strangers at a beach front hostel, there is far more on their mind than an extended vacation.
All of them are running from something. And they all have secrets they’d kill to keep…
The perfect summer thriller to devour at the poolside, I am thrilled to be a part of the Compulsive Readers tour for ‘The Vacation’ by John Marr (previously published as Welcome To Wherever You Are)
Available in paperback from Pan Macmillan, my thanks to the publishers for my gifted review copy and Tracy for the tour invite.
This is the book to make people envious at the beach.
This is the book to sip a cocktail whilst reading.
This is the book to pack for your summer holiday.
Brimming with Marrs’ trademark wit and with deceit, suspicion and shenanigans galore,Vacation is a perfect summer thriller.
You take 8 strangers (Or are they?) and put them in the most unlikely setting (a Venice Beach travellers hostel)
And then let the sparks fly….
The main premise of the novel is that no matter where you go and how hard you try,you never really let go of who and what you are.
And that moral ambiguity is so well evidence in the short chapters, the thrusting narrative as we readers flip back and forth between the now and the then of each person.
They have come from all different parts of the world in attempt to forget, get away or put into place a plan which has long been gestating, but for one of them, the holiday will be a one way ticket…
Laugh out loud funny, sharp, dry and a disappointly quick read for such a big tome( believe me,when you start you tear through the pages and then kick yourself that it is over) this is quintessential Marrs for the reader whi knows him and a great entry level tale for those just discovering him.
