About the book…

YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO STOP READING.
BECAUSE YOU’LL NEVER GUESS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT . . .

I inhaled every chapter, desperate to find out what was going on. Those cliffhangers!’ Andrea Mara
‘Clever, complex and expertly planned’ Rachel Abbott

When her husband Harry walks out after just six months, a girls’ weekend away with two friends seems like just what Sam needs.

But they aren’t even halfway to their destination when things start to go wrong: car trouble that just happens to leave them stranded in the town where Harry lives.

And that’s only the beginning.

Because there are three things Sam doesn’t yet know:

One of her friends is lying about what happened.
One is lying about who she is.
And one of them will never make it home . . .

‘The Perfect Escape’ by Leah Konen was published on January 4th by Penguin, huge thanks to the awesome publicity team for my gifted review copy of this exceptional thriller.

A unique twist on the trope of men getting away from it all by heading into the woods and leaving their responsibilities behind, The Perfect Escape is everything you would want to read in the post Christmas limbo period.

Three women, one or more of whom may not be telling the truth, are all in need of escape from their crumbling relationships, and decide to mobilise ‘Sgt Diana’s Lonely Heart’s Club’ getaway.

Diana, separated from husband Brandon, Margaret(also called Peggy) and Sam, whose new husband Harry has left their marriage of less than a year , for the arms of another woman are all heading for the perfect setting of Saratoga Springs but there is just a teeny tiny problem…

You might think you are running away from your problems but 9 times out of 10, you bring them with you. And when someone is hiding who they really are , the danger is exponentially increased, to the point where not all 3 of the women might return back home.

The short, sharp chapters revolve through each of the women at the time, ratcheting the tension up as small details of each woman’s life are revealed in turns. We , the readers, have no idea about these women and are heading out to the middle of nowhere with no real idea of who they are or what their motivations are. This puts you ill at ease and uncomfortable as you try and work out just what is happening to whom and who, if any, of the women you are rooting for. Leah is always several steps ahead of you, and I was happily there for the ride, getting whiplash, gasping out loud at the plot twists which come thick and fast despite my air of cynicism and suspicion from page 1.

She has done it again, taking the skills she displayed in debut thriller novel ,  ‘One White Lie’ and ramping them up to the max. The three women create this reactive triangle of feminine friendship, where they bounce off of each other, engender an atmosphere of mistrust and danger which leaves you, and them, dangling at the end of each chapter and promising yourself, ‘Just one more before lights out…’ .

Both the book and you know this is a well intentioned lie and that you will keep going to the bitter end!
