About the book…

A gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of ‘I Am Watching You’.

The perfect family?

Or the perfect lie?

It’s their daughter’s graduation and Rachel and Ed Hartley are expecting it to be one of their family’s happiest days. But when she stumbles and falls on stage during the ceremony, a beautiful moment turns to chaos: Gemma has been shot, and just like that, she’s fighting for her life.

PI Matthew Hill is one of the first on the scene. A cryptic message Gemma received earlier in the day suggests someone close to her was about to be exposed. But who? As Matthew starts to investigate, he finds more and more layers obscuring the truth. He even begins to suspect the Hartleys are hiding something big—from him and from each other.

While Gemma lies in hospital in a coma, her would-be killer is still out there. Can Matthew unravel the family’s secrets before the attacker strikes again?

My thanks to Rhiannon from FmCm for inviting me on the blogtour, and publishers Thomas And Mercer for my gifted review copy of ‘Her Perfect Family’, available from all good book stores , November 1st onwards!

This should have been the happiest days of this family’s life, to see the culmination of years of study come to fruition in a graduation ceremony. From the seemingly inconsequential beginning when Gemma chooses a lemon, instead of a pink dress, to the ringing out of a bullet that finds its mark, this escalates into a high stakes thriller that does not let the reader go until the final page.

The difference between the public, and the private face of a family is endlessly interesting to me, and I found this deep dive by Matthew Hill into just what has gone on to lead to the point of attempted murder fascinating. The book works backwards, in a way, as it unravels the complications bubbling below the surface.

A very cinematic, and visual storytelling style is employed from the very beginning, which pulls you in to the mystery , alternating between what is going on behind Gemma’s medicated sleep and Matthew’s investigations . He feels a personal connection, having been the first on the scene-another family day out interrupted by chaos.

It shows how easily one lie can escalate into a situation that requires an outsider to act like Alexander the Great and slices the Gordian Knot in half.

The Perfect Family doesn’t exist, it is a social construct which forever lies in the eyes of the beholder , and is held up as a pedestal worth climbing on top of. The only problem with pedestals, is that sooner or later you are bound to fall off…
