About the book…

There’s no escape from this room. Full of menace and suspense, it’s an unputdownable thriller–and a paperback original!

Alissa, Sky, Mint, and Miles just wanted something to do on a Friday night, so they signed up for an Escape Room. They have one hour to find clues, crack codes, and figure out puzzles. The Game Master told them they can always leave the game. But what if that’s not true? What if the Game Master has no intention of letting them out?

Another Y.A paperback original, also available in e-book editions, ‘Escape Room’ by Maren Stoffels was published by Underlined Publishers in 2017.

What to say about it…first of all, I am a huge Y.A fan and also recognise that I am not the target audience.

That aside, this is a neat thriller with short, sharp chapters shared between the 4 principal protagonists, and the person who has lured them to this Escape Room, on this particular night.  I personally found the length of the chapters meant I couldn’t really get to know or relate to Mint,Miles, Alissa or Sky, the further into the book, the longer the length gets and it feels like you are settling into the read.

I also haven’t yet gone to an Escape Room, I have watched films and have a vague notion of what it entails, even so, I had to suspend a lot of disbelief, at how the one person can take over a place of business without consequence, or anyone else figuring out what is going on.

The sense of menace is skillfully built and you do get the sense of claustrophobia in which these teens need to reveal their secrets to each other in order to survive, and that makes it a literal and figurative escape room, they need to escape the way they see each other, and be truthful for once.

It tackles the way teens deal with trauma really well, and how fickle and deceptively fragile their relationships are. I think it would be fine for older teens due to the nature of the plot, and a scene of sexual content.

That said, I think it is a fun way to spend a couple of hours, trying to work out what is going on. And that is not a bad thing!
