About the book…
The hilarious debut novel from Lex Croucher. A classic romcom with a Regency-era twist, for fans of Mean Girls and/or Jane Austen.
Abandoned by her parents, middle-class Georgiana Ellers has moved to a new town to live with her dreary aunt and uncle. At a particularly dull party, she meets the enigmatic Frances Campbell, a wealthy member of the in-crowd who lives a life Georgiana couldn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams.
Lonely and vulnerable, Georgiana falls in with Frances and her unfathomably rich, deeply improper friends. Georgiana is introduced to a new world: drunken debauchery, mysterious young men with strangely arresting hands, and the upper echelons of Regency society.
But the price of entry to high society might just be higher than Georgiana is willing to pay …
Huge thanks to Jenna from Zaffre Books for the blogtour invite and gifted review copy of ‘Reputation’ which is published on July 8th in paperback and e-book formats.
I’m going to let you into a secret, you may not like me much afterwards, but I am not a fan of Jane Austen and I couldn’t get into Bridgerton…
So why did I choose to read ‘Reputation’?
Mainly because I am always prepared to have my mind changed by an excellent writer and this has persuaded me to perhaps give the author beloved by so many, another try!
And I absolutely loved it-it is witty, very modern, with a plot you can get to grips with a wittiness which belies its pastel cover.
Heroine, Georgiana, wants to be where the cool girls are, and Frances is possibly the coolest of them all. A determined social climber, she will stop at almost nothing to be at the top table, and this drive causes her to be reckless with her actual friend group. At the risk of discarding those who see her innate good qualities , whilst despairing at her actions, she cheerfully abandons good sense and puts herself in predicament after predicament to prove her worthiness to Frances.
And with each act, she creates a cumulative rolling stone of frustration and annoyance to Frances who, herself has worked to get to where she currently is. As they manoeuvre around each other, which one will come out on top? Will their entanglements lead to an amicable solution? How far will either girl, or both, go to secure their position in high society? And why is an intact reputation so vital to this end?
Funny,by turns dark and edgy , engaging and eminently adaptable to the big (or small!) screen, this is a novel to be seen with at all the best society functions!
