About the book…

A passionate call for international gender equality by a leading entrepreneur; this smart, accessible and inspiring book makes the case for why all nations need more women at the top of politics and economics.

`The status of women is a global challenge; it touches every human being without exception.

How is it possible that countries where women have achieved political, economic and social rights after exhausting struggles remain seemingly indifferent to the egregiousness of other nations where the status of women is still tragic? The time has come to help those left behind

Huge thanks to Bei at Midas PR for inviting me on the blogtour for ‘Saving The World’ by Paola Diana which was published by Quartet Books in paperback format in 2018.

I have…thoughts. Lots of them. This book is a mere 161 pages long yet manages to fit an awful lot of culture, politics and gender studies in it. The focus is mostly westernised, yet there are parts which focus on the parts of the world beyond America and Europe. It feels like an honest and earnest examination of how we find ourselves in a situation, in the 21st Century, where women are still not equal to men, and how much of that is our own fault.

This does not make comfortable reading-by taking such themes as politics, culture, and religion, Paola examines the structure of a patriarchal society that sees women as less than men (men are, after all, made in God’s image therefore women are essentially one step away from being holy). Culture venerates attributes which are antithetical to how women should behave-being strong, brave, saying no, all these things are not what is expected of women whose lives are seen as conduits,or adjuncts,to their menfolk.

What Paola proposes is an opening of eyes, a beseechment to stop being ‘nice‘ because it is expected. By laying out the myriad ways in which women and their voices have been subjugated, she presents a whistle stop tour through her manifesto of standing up to be counted. She does this by making you angry at injustices which pre-exist modern history, proposing female role models such as JK Rowling (a BIG thumbs up from this reader)to look towards-real change makers who stand up, are bold, refreshingly honest and refuse to back down.

And in an era when so many people cannot even agree on what a woman is -the discussion on transgenderism and fluidity is in its very nature, a way of diluting and distracting the power of women by directing it back to….men! If anyone can be a woman, then surely that negates the entire prospect of equality, makes women second class citizens in the own sex and invalidates the experiences that we live through every single day.

A woman is an adult human female, it is an imutable, biological truth which can be denied by cultish cries of ‘woman is a feeling’ well no, no it is not. It is not a costume, not a disguise, it is a truth which is behind female genital mutilation, sexual exploitation and trafficking of girls in the sex trade, violence and femicide as we continue, men and women alike, to undervalue the resources that we could be bringing to the whole world. Representation will only matter if women truly believe that they are worth standing up for, standing up with and moving forward to achieve their goals.

Stepping forward means, to me, a refusal to accept norms and pushing back on limits-some of which we place upon ourselves and some of which are burdened from birth. Our sex should not be seen as a handicap, it should be seen as a boon, a gift and not a curse.
