I am hugely grateful to Alainna from Orion books for inviting me to read ‘‘The Art Of Creativity’ , out now in ebook edition, and thanks so much for my gifted review copy!

”In this busy world, our free time is squeezed so tightly that we don’t make time for our creative side to be expressed.”

Susie is absolutely right- never have we needed the release or the comfort of the creative arts more than we do right now. Favourite films, tv shows and books have been what many of us have turned to during lockdown, but how many of us have turned to any creative endeavours ?

Have we got more ‘free time’ now, especially women who are carrying the burden of working from home and caring for children during these months, or has it been too difficult to switch off and tap into this creative well which exists in every one of us?

In this book, Susie aims, with 7 lessons, to not only acknowledge our intrinsic creative nature, but also how to nurture it, make time for it and see it as an essential part of our psychological well being.

Working through ‘Fears and Blocks and How to Overcome Them’, ‘Journalling’, ‘Meditation and Breathing’, ‘Boosting your Brainwave States and Mind-mapping’, ‘Self Care and Nourishing the Soul’, ‘Be a Maverick’, and ‘Future Gazing’, is an act of self care.

It removes fallacy about skills and focuses instead on the making. It tackles fears and focuses on what has been achieved as opposed to comparing yourself to others. It urges you to connect with a part which many of us may have placed in cold storage, and brought it out to defrost, to see the value in this part of our psyche and to nurture it. Each and every person reading this has the ability to surrender to the process and find their own creative path be it through visual arts, music or other forms of making.

”When you get into the creative flow, there is a positive impact in other aspects of your life as your belief systems and paradigms shift.”

It is not a passive reading experience, this is a book to engage in and with as your journey to a  creative self begins. Exercises are threaded throughout the book and as you work alongside the lessons, you find you are creating your own resource, your own journal to a more mindful, skillful version of yourself.

As someone who knits, sews and dabbles in mixed media arts, this year has been challenging in the extreme. Work has continued but the ability to switch off, surrender to the creative process and make is next to impossible. I am so grateful to have read ‘The Art Of Creativity,’ and felt the beginning of that need to make resurface.
