About the book…
Introducing the first official Harry Potter knitting book—a deluxe guide to creating over 25 authentic Harry Potter knits based on the iconic films.
Channel the magic of the Harry Potter films from the screen to your needles with the ultimate knitter’s guide to the Wizarding World. Featuring over 25 magical knits pictured in gorgeous full-color photography, this book includes patterns for clothing, home projects, and keepsakes pulled straight from the movies—and even includes a few iconic costume pieces as seen on-screen. With yarn suggestions based on the true colors used in the films, projects range from simple patterns like the Hogwarts house scarves to more complex projects like Mrs. Weasley’s Christmas sweaters. A true fan must-have, this book also includes fun facts, original costume sketches, film stills, and other behind-the-scenes treasures. ‘Harry Potter-Knitting Magic’ is sure to have fans everywhere summoning needles, conjuring yarn, and practicing their best knitting wizardry
The only bone I have to pick with this book is that it is an American one-this means that all the wool
suggestions are US brands, and if you particularly finicky about your makes looking exactly like the illustrations, you may be disappointed.
However, that aside, this is a book of great beauty and is absolutely a passion project rather than a simple cash in on the HP name.
It’s officially licensed, which is important to this reader , a hardback book with a high production value and beautifully illustrated makes.
These are divided into Crafty Creatures, Wizarding Wardrobe, Inspired Apparel and Delightful Decor.
So if you want to fully indulge your inner nerd, you can wear HP AND decorate your house/homewares in relatable items-SCORE!!
The patterns range in difficulty from beginner to complex, providing a good range of itmes that can be challenging but absolutely makeable. It assumes an ability to knit-there aren’t any instructions on how to knit in the book, so either find yourself someone who can, or there are some great Youtube tutorials to help. This book requires the basic ability to cast on, cast off, and how to read a pattern.
I found this book on sale at our local Asda if you would like to pick it up and see what it is all about, that might be a good place to start-if like me you live somewhere that is a book desert, it can be hard gauging whether it is worth splashing out on a book of this size (I would absolutely recommend if you can knit and are a HP fan)
As well as the expected items-Mrs Weasley letter jumpers, house scarves and such-there are beautiful pieces which are sure to become heirloom items like the Time Turner Jumper or the Deathly Hallows shawl.
There is truly something to satisfying the most discerning fan, and what I love is that you can easily adapt the colours to suit your own favourite shades-you could make this time turner jumper in a variety of colours!
At the bottom of this post, I have included several links to wool websites in the UK, who stock a large variety of wool and accompanying knitting supplies.
They are sites I have ordered from in the past and found to have great customer support, and you should hopefully be able to substitute yarns there. Happy knitting, the biggest problem I have now is trying to decide which of the projects to start first!
