About the book…

Sometimes the past just won’t stay buried.

When 14 year old Brittany Cushing disappears one night, her parents are devastated, certain she has been taken.

They can’t bear to think about who has done this and why, about what might be happening to their precious daughter.

Their neighbor, Taylor, is a rock, doing everything she can to help – organizing search parties and setting up a Facebook page.

As this affluent California community becomes focused on the hunt for the missing girl, it slowly becomes clear that her disappearance is linked to terrible secrets from the past.

Secrets that must be kept hidden at all costs….

Quiet couple, Moira and Alan move into a cul de sac with their 14 year old, home schooled daughter Brittany. Their arrival makes no waves, however, one of the residents notes that they knew things wouldn’t be the same after seeing their ornate globe being unloaded from the moving van-delusions of grandeur from a gossipy neighbour? This is the first inkling of not all being as it seems and that who exactly is ‘The Good Neighbour’, or who regards themselves as such,is not going to be obvious.

The new family ruffle no feathers, but at the same time, living in a cul-de-sac, you would think that there would be an effort to try and get on with the other residents, however, it could be seen that by keeping themselves to themselves, the Cushings draw more attention to themselves. However, it is when Brittany goes missing two months after moving to California, that they are forced to deal with well meaning neighbours such as Taylor that you really get to see their true nature…

A innocently set up Facebook page detailing not only the hunt for Brittany, but also the goodness of their neighbours is not an altruistic act for Taylor, despite acting as though it is. Her need to be viewed as a good person has unexpected side effects when across the country, a woman sees a picture of Brittany and messages Taylor to say that the missing girl is her child, Brittany Green…

A tight and tautly wound thriller, this novel explores the nature of the modern world we live in and how well we really know-or do not know the people who live close to us. The motives of all the people in this previously quiet, and well off suburb are thrust under the spotlight as the hunt intesifies-nobody can work out whether Brittany was taken or left of her own accord. But when she knew nobody and didn’t go to school, who could have helped her and why?

I really enjoyed this book, it had underlying themes of what it means to be a parent, particularly a mother, and the means you will go to to be seen as the perfect parent . Unresolved grief and the need to keep up appearances are important factors in the private persona as the media spotlight throws itself on a quiet neighbourhood which will never be the same after the Cushings move in.
