About the book…
A dead man. A missing woman. A haunted cottage. A secret hidden for thirty years…
In 1988 a famous record producer took his own life and a woman vanished after attending a party at Crow’s Cottage.
When the cottage’s owner passes away decades later, the property falls into the hands of his nephew, who finds a strange box hidden there. It is a replica of an infamous occult device called the Mephisto Arcane. In the wake of its discovery come sightings of an apparition. The crew of the paranormal TV show ‘Where the Dead Walk’ are invited to investigate the haunting.
They are about to find the past guards its secrets jealously, and that unlocking them has consequences.
HUGE thanks to Tracy Fenton of Compulsive Readers for the blog tour invite for ‘Crow’s Cottage’, it was a brilliant read!
You have the ghosts(literally and metaphorical) from the past colliding with the present in a cottage which may or may not be a magnet for evil.
This plays on the trope of the trapped room mystery which plays with your senses and plunges you into a nightmare of a tv show with memorable characters such as Ray, Chloe and Charles who have taken a front of stage role following the events of Book 1.
The series which began with ‘Where The Dead Walk’, which introduces the paranormal team , Kate and Henry along side medium, Charles, who undertake paranormal investigations a la ‘Most Haunted’.
It’s kind of a cross between that and ‘Supernatural’ in that they have different motivations for carrying out these investigations, I was worried that the work in Book 1 would be undone by removing the 2 main characters so quickly from the narrative but it really works and also gives the series more scope as they can be brought in and out in the future.
It’s a risky gamble but totally pays off as you get to know showrunner Chloe who I really took to.
The investigation is very spooky indeed-an inherited cottage complete with mysterious figure and things going bump in the night…it’s spooky and atmospheric without being terrifying so doesn’t sacrifice scares for character development.
Great for reading just before the witching hour…and beyond , John Bowen creates a believable world of supernatural investigators,a team with a great heart who investigate the Mephisto Arcane and whether supernatural elements were brought into Crow’s Cottage..or were already there to begin with
*Mephistopheles was the demon to whom Faust sold his soul for eternal life in the German novel by Goethe* at a measured pace .
This was important to me as a reader in that John was introducing characters to the forefront and could have sacrificed character develpment for scares and a frenetic rush to the end.
I genuinely enjoyed Book 1, Book 2 even more so …hoping for a Book 3 !
