Today I am extremely pleased to bring to your attention a book with a difference.

‘Leo and the Lightning Dragons’

About this very special book…

Written by Gill White for her son Leo who suffers from Ohtahara Syndrome, an extremely rare form of epilepsy, and beautifully illustrated by Fife artist Gilli B, this story has been positively received by parents of children with complex needs, by care workers and medical staff and by parents of healthy young children who love the book simply as an adventure story.

Everybody in the kingdom is supporting the brave knight Leo in his battle against his fearsome dragons. They try lots of different things to help him defeat them but eventually Leo realises that the most important thing to do is to believe in himself.

This beautifully illustrated book with a poignant and uplifting rhyming story encourages children to persevere and find strength in the face of adversity, even when it seems that nothing is working.

All royalties from the sale of this book will go to CHAS (Children’s Hospices across Scotland).

I read Leo with my 8 year old daughter who has abscence seiuzure epilepsy, which is the kind you grow out of eventually(very much the good kind).

We were absolutely blown away by the beautiful illustrations. The story is deceptively simple and so effective, it really works as it explains illness as something that maybe you cannot see but with love and determination you can be a knight inside and out. Leo totally is a heroic knight! He has so much courage and love around him and it powers him to fight even though he feels small.

The message really strikes home about what epilepsy is and how it strikes you. Flo found herself welling up because she could see things represented that related so much to her. We used lightning to explain how epilepsy works in her brain, funnily enough, so when she saw it actually in the pages of a book she gasped. It’s so heartwarming and immersive and supportive, she really, really loved it and I can see it becoming a firm favourite for her.

Brave, courageous, bold and joyful, this is a book that every child’s library needs.

It’s such a wonderful book, we are so grateful to have been part of this Love Books Group Tour and we wish Leo and his family so much love and support !
