Part 2 of my Agatha Chrisite Year has me looking at a lesser known title, ‘The Man In The Brown Suit’

I genuinely cannot remember the last time that I read this one, it was published in 1924 and is  available as an audio book, graphic novel,eBook, paperback and filmed as TV adaptation starring Edward Woodward in 1989.

This story concerns an orphan, Anne Beddingfield, daughter of an archaeologist who witness a train track electrocution in London. A piece of paper from the fallen man’s pocket, with a cryptic note on,which Anne hides away.

Attending the inquest, she learns he was to attend a house viewing where the very next day, a woman is found murdered. All this leads Anne to travelling on a ship to South Africa to investigate the mysterious deaths.

Diamonds, gold, inheritance and family arguments all play their part in this mystery adventure as Anne tries to identify just who was the man in the brown suit?

Abandoning sense to the spirit of adventure, Anne is a thoroughly modern heroine who has nothing to lose and has her father’s spirit of adventure.

International adventures, which are more thriller than mystery , could be an about face away from the established Christie characters of Poirot and Marple, and therefore perhaps could put potential readers off who are looking for these well known, and loved, cultural icons. However, it makes a refreshing change to this reader’s mind, to the tried and tested Christie format

This is a fast paced and slight read packed full of plot-almost too much-that I enjoyed re-reading and would recommend.

Join me , next time, for my review of the classic Tommy and Tuppence Beresford mystery ‘N or M?’

Also there is The Year Of Agatha blog and the official Agatha Christie readalong if anybody fancies joining in!

Please feel free to comment about your favourite Christie stories or if you are taking part in any reading challenges !
